Is GAFY a registered nonprofit?
Yes, The Global Athletic Foundation for Youth (GAFY) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit private foundation and is registered in Virginia.
What is GAFY?
GAFY is Global Athletic Foundation for Youth which was established in March 2017 to support youth through sports in the Caribbean region as well as in the U.S.
What does GAFY do?
The GAFY mission is to empower youth (especially at-risk youth) through sports. Youth that participate in sports or activities have a lower risk of drug use, criminal activity, and dropping out of school
How do you help the kids?
GAFY believes the best way to initially help empower youth through sports is to enhance current programs already in place. Rather than starting from the ground up we create synergy with our partners who already know the youth in their area and to allow them to increase the quality and quantity of opportunities offered.
What areas do you work in?
GAFY is currently in working with community partners in the Caribbean as well as the US.
How many children are being helped thru your programs?
Currently we are providing support to approximately 500 children that are in our community partners programs and expect that number to be over 1,000 within the next year.
Can you give some examples of the work you are doing?
GAFY began working with an at-risk girl’s center in the Spring in New Providence (Bahamas) to provide athletic facilities and equipment destroyed in Hurricane Matthew.
GAFY started a refurbishment project in the summer for a youth boxing program in Nassau (Bahamas) damaged in Hurricane Matthew.
GAFY worked with a community center in September after Hurricane Harvey to provide basic goods needed as well as youth athletic equipment.
Our GAFY student chapter at Virginia Tech is currently working on a project to help local children in the U.S. We expect to have student chapters at 5 colleges by the end of 2018 and 10-15 colleges by the end of 2019 doing work in their local communities.
GAFY is hosting a Youth Conference in Nassau in March 2018 in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy and the Bahamian government.
Do you currently have U.S. Government partners?
Yes, GAFY entered into a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas and expects to partner with the U.S. Embassies in all the countries we will be doing work in.
What can I do to help?
The best way to support our programs is to attend our fundraiser (Caribbean Beach Benefit) or be a sponsor. We also have volunteer opportunities at the fundraiser as well as with our student chapters and service events.
