10 Fun Facts about the Bahamas

1. Bahamas

The name Bahamas comes from the Spanish Baha Mar which means "shallow sea."

2. Lucayans

The original inhabitants of the Bahamas were the Lucayans (pronounced loo-KY-en; "people of the islands"). Lucayans were a part of the Tainos, a subgroup of the Arawakan Indians, who inhabited most of the Caribbean islands at that time. By 1520 they have all been removed from the Bahamas. 

3. Dean's Blue Hole

Dean's Blue Hole is the world's second deepest salt water blue hole* dropping 663 ft deep. *Blue hole is a sinkhole with an entrance below the water level. 

4. Pink Sand Beach

Harbor Island is famous for its pink sand beach stretching all along the east side of the island.  The pink hue comes from a microscopic organism called foraminifera with bright pink or red shells.

5. Lucayan National Park

Lucayan National Park underwater cave system is the longest known in the world!

6. Versailles Gardens

Versailles Gardens on Paradise Island is one of the most popular spots for weddings in the Bahamas.

7. Pig Beach

The uninhibited Big Major Cay (also known as Pig Beach) island became famous thanks to a colony of swimming pigs (feral pigs). The pigs became an attraction in the Exuma group of islands. 

8. Conch

Conch is a large snail which has firm white meat, similar to calamari. It is considered to be the traditional/national food in the Bahamas and can be served raw and cooked in salads, soups, grilled, stewed, etc.

9. Flamingos

Inagua National Park located in the southernmost island of the Bahamas, is home to flamingos, the national bird of the Bahamas. The flamingo species made a comeback from the brink of extinction to a colony of over 50,000 birds.
